Introduction
The refurbishment and remodelling of a private house in a West London conservation area. A central four storey structural glass stair was inserted below a new large rooflight, allowing daylight to flood down through the whole house. A double height glazed structure was added to the rear of the house linking the living space to the garden.
A detached classical nineteenth century house on a wide street in a leafy neighbourhood, the existing house had many problems-badly built extensions, a wasteful plan and a recent, ill-conceived renovation-but great potential. The interior was stripped out, staircases relocated, redesigned and made new, and the back extension redesigned and rebuilt giving the clients more space than they ever imagined possible.
The house is in a conservation area in west London therefore all alterations to the outside of the house were restricted to the rear. From the front the only sign of difference are the plants of the roof terrace. Having gutted the interior a central four storey structural glass stair was inserted below a new large roof light, allowing daylight to flood down through the whole house. A double-height glazed structure was added to the rear of the house linking the living space to the garden. The glazing is protected from thermal gains by automatic external roller blinds with sensors to close in the event of rain.
At lower ground the swimming pool and family room open onto the terrace and garden. On the upper ground and entrance floor the living and dining spaces open into the glazed rear addition. On the first floor the library and master bedroom share a cedar deck overlooking the garden. The second floor has four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and above there is a roof garden.
