Introduction
Rick Mather Architects have been selected to design a new home for the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, Italy. The collection which is currently housed in the Museo Egizio will be transferred to the Manica Nuova, a newly restored ' sleeve' wing of the Royal Palace creating a new focus for museum activity in Turin.
The integration of the Royal Residence with new civic activities will enhance understanding of the art and architecture, and allows the collection to be displayed on a scale appropriate to its importance. The relocation of the Galleria Sabauda and the integration of the Royal Museums is part of a strategic plan for the city of Turin which will host the Winter Olympics in 2006. The plan lays out a vision for the future of Turin and the surrounding area and aims to establish Turin as a contemporary European city.
