Introduction
Rick Mather Architects are leading the team to refurbish the Grade II Listed Centre Point complex. The new proposals will look to transform the office building and public realm into a new residential use tower with retail, restaurants and a major public space at its base. The new public square will be formed by removing the road below, and will be comparable in scale to some of London's most famous squares. This will be a vibrant and unique public space with its own identity.
With the completion of Crossrail, Tottenham Court Road station will be almost as busy as Heathrow Airport. As St. Giles will become a focal point for those who visit the capital, it is important to create attractive public space around the revitalised Centre Point.
The road passing through and under the Centre Point Link Bridge will be removed and a new pedestrian square created. Shops and restaurants around its perimeter will keep the space safe and animated, offering places for residents and visitors to sit, meet and eat.
The existing office use within the tower is to be converted to housing by Conran and Partners, to provide a sustainable and better use for the building.
