Set in a wide residential street in a conservation area in West London this existing detached four storey period property had several problems. A poorly constructed extension to the rear of the house and a badly sited stair linking the lower ground floor and pool room with the upper living areas threw away the opportunity to link the living spaces and garden in a coherent way. The arrangement of cellular rooms off a main stair gave no feeling of light or space or connection between floors, which the client was very keen to explore. A four storey structural glass stair was inserted into the front of the house set below a large automatic sliding rooflight allowing daylight to flood down through the whole house. Another major addition to the house was a glazed structure linking a double height living space to the garden. Lighting was very carefully considered throughout to be as discreet as possible yet highlight the clients artwork. |
