Neal's Yard

Upon entry a series of floating cantilevered stair-treads within a white space ascend to the free-form plan of the upper floor. The strategy was to make a large open space on the top floor to flow out onto roof terraces, with the open stairwell as a central core, to carry light to the lower level which houses the bathrooms, bedroom and entrance hall. The client's wish to be able to see the sky when he showered and his roof garden upon waking, led to the inclusion of a clear glass floor which can change to opaque for privacy, enabling natural light down to the main bedroom and bathroom. Existing saw-tooth rooflights were utilised with a further added above the seating area opening out onto the terrace beyond.
