The Avenue Masterplan

Appointed by English Partnerships and East Midlands Development Agency as masterplanners for the former Avenue Coking Works in Chesterfield. The 98 hectare site, is the most contaminated in the National Coalfields Programme. The aim is to turn an area of extreme environmental degradation into a place that will be renowned for its integration of sustainable landscape management and development.

The Avenue presents the opportunity to set the standard for the reshaping of a post-industrial wasteland into a new sustainable, productive landscape. The strategy is open ended, but begins with the fundamentals, remaking the soil, reshaping the terrain, establishing an ecology. Those are the base case requirements for remediation. By thinking ahead, with the intention of making the site amenable to future developments, attempts to establish a landscape order, which mediates between the scale and regularity of the sites recent form, and the residential patterns surrounding it.
