06/08/2004 Short-list for Central Milton Keynes announced Eight developers have been short-listed to submit formal tenders for two major housing opportunities in Central Milton Keynes (CMK). The two development areas, known as West End CMK and Campbell Park, will together deliver nearly 4,000 of the 6,400 new homes to be built in CMK as part of long-term plans created by national regeneration agency, English Partnerships, and Milton Keynes Council through their joint venture, CMK The Future. Crest Nicholson, Charteris, Barratt and Bellway Homes will each submit a tender with design proposals for the first 240 units that will kick-start development in Campbell Park. Urban Splash and St John will compete to build the first 250 homes in the 650-home first phase of West End CMK. George Wimpey and Dutch developer, Bouwfonds will be competing for both opportunities The West End CMK site, which is close to the main-line railway station, has outline consent agreed for 1,960 apartments and townhouses, coupled with shops, offices, a 420-place primary school and community facilities. The successful bidder will be asked to launch a design competition for a mixed-use landmark building that will define the quality of the scheme. Brian Morrison, Project Director for CMK, said, "The calibre of the short-list is extremely high and we are looking forward to receiving some imaginative and innovative bids for each of the areas. This is the start of a new and very exciting phase and one that brings city centre living to Milton Keynes. This mix of offices, shops and leisure uses with residential development will enliven CMK and is a key component of the growth plans for the city and the surrounding region." The first phase of Campbell Park incorporates around 240 apartments, town houses and accompanying commercial space in a parkland setting. Located on Avebury Boulevard, Phase 1 will link existing developments and through the creation of new landscape spaces encourage and improve access to Campbell Park, Milton Keynes' premier public park. Developers will be issued with a development brief and design codes for
Campbell Park in late September and West End CMK in November. They will
then be given 10 weeks to submit their tenders. Development proposals
overall will be weighted One developer will be appointed for each area and the selection panel will be made up of representatives from English Partnerships, Milton Keynes Council and the CMK Board. A decision is anticipated early in the New Year. On completion, West End-CMK will consist of around 2,000 homes with an additional 2,350 properties planned for Campbell Park. A minimum of 30 per cent of all new homes will be categorised as affordable. Milton Keynes is expected to double in size in the next three decades, adding more than 70,000 new homes. To drive this growth and create a more vibrant and urban city centre, a massive development programme to deliver some 6,400 new homes, a £400m retail expansion along with more office, leisure and community facilities within CMK, is planned. --ENDS --
