Feilden Clegg Bradley's hotly anticipated proposals to transform the Southbank Centre will be revealed next month, it was announced today.

The practice’s plans for the so-called Festival Wing - consisting of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery - will go on public display on March 7.

The design brief was to refurbish and renew the three 1960s venues, as well as to explore a more ambitious project to reclaim underused spaces around the whole complex. It is this second aspect which has concerned conservationists including the Twentieth Century Society.

Southbank Centre chief executive Alan Bishop said: "Building on the Rick Mather masterplan, this will be the next stage of the refurbishment of Southbank Centre, following the hugely successful transformation of the Royal Festival Hall."

Artistic director Jude Kelly said: “Our vision is to make the most of these extraordinary buildings and the spaces around them so that we can provide more art for more people of all ages and create world-class facilities for artists and visitors to enjoy, fit for the 21st century.

"We will draw on the continued success of our year-round festival programme and the original spirit of the Festival of Britain to transform this part of the site."

The draft designs will go on show on level two of the Royal Festival Hall and at southbankcentre.co.uk/festivalwing from March 7.
